Recycling
Ordinance Highlights
- · The borough
has no single hauler. Most residents have contracted with the
three major haulers (BFI, Waste Management, and J.P. Mascaro and
Sons).
- Residents
recycle newsprint and other paper, Numbers 1 and 2 plastics, aluminum
and bi-metallic cans and glass.
- Over the
past three years (1996, 1997, 1998) borough residents have recycled
almost 467 tons of materials.
- The recycling
ordinance is enforced by an employee in the Code Enforcement Department.
- The borough
has an active leaf collection program. It sells biodegradable
leaf collection bags from a number of stores in the borough. They
are collected twice a year and taken to an authorized disposal
site.

Recycling plays
an important part in the Hatfield Rubber Company operation
even though it does not receive a lot of its raw materials in cardboard
boxes.
The firm, also
known as Surco Inc., uses specialized molds to custom manufacturer
between 500 and 600 different rubber products for a wide variety
of customers. During the manufacturing process, a certain amount
of rubber waste occurs. This waste is trimmed from the final product,
ground up and added back into the raw material mix for reuse. In
that sense, the company has its own internal recycling program inside
its Hatfield Borough plant.
Surco receives
some raw materials in cardboard boxes. When they are emptied, they
are crushed and placed in a dumpster which is collected several
times a week. Because of its unique recycling programs---both inside
the plant and outside---Hatfield Borough awarded the "Excellence
in Recycling Award" to the Hatfield Rubber Company, or Surco
